LG introduces new UHDTVs with quantum dot technology

LG is showing three new UHDTVs equipped with a variant of quantum dot technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The SJ9500, SJ8500 and SJ8000 also support three different HDR standards.

According to LG, the quantum dots, which the company refers to under the name Nano Cell, have a diameter of one to several nanometers in the panel and the devices can display more than a billion different colors. With the new models, LG is competing with arch rival Samsung, which uses a similar technology.

In the HDR area, there is support for Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and Hybrid Log Gamma. The TVs can also apply an HDR effect to SDR footage. The new models run on webOS 3.5, which includes easier and faster access to the user’s favorite apps.

The three different models are all equipped with an IPS panel and will be available in various sizes. LG has not yet announced specific information about which sizes these will be. In any case, a 55″ variant of the top model, the SJ9500, will be released in the Benelux. LG will exhibit the televisions at the CES fair in Las Vegas, which starts this week.
