Bitcoin value exceeds thousand dollar mark
The value of bitcoins passed the thousand dollar mark over the weekend. The last time the price of the virtual currency was at this level was in 2014. The year before, the currency hit its all-time high at around $1200.
Currently, the price is around 1013 dollars or 963 euros. Coindesk writes that the value is not quite at the same level as 2014, but that crossing the thousand dollar mark is nevertheless a milestone for the virtual currency. The price has fluctuated in recent days, but on Sunday it reached the thousand dollar mark. Analysts expect the price to reach 2013 levels this year, according to Coindesk.
In that year, the price was at its all-time high, after a very rapid rise towards the end of 2013. It then fell, which lasted approximately until the second half of 2015. When the value was around USD 220, after which the price increased again. In June 2016, the total value of all bitcoins in circulation was about ten billion dollars, which amounted to 8.8 billion euros.
In May, Australian Craig Wright claimed to be the creator of Bitcoin and to hide behind the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Although he would have proved the authenticity of his claim in a private meeting with journalists, no public proof was ever forthcoming. Wright reported that he “didn’t have the courage to do it.”
