‘Facebook wants to give content from media companies a prominent place’
Facebook, in collaboration with media companies, would like to give articles a prominent place on the social networking site. Content would be offered under the name Collections, which would be posted directly to users’ newsfeed.
This is reported by the generally well-established Business Insider. Collections should become a partnership with media companies, according to the site’s sources, although it is not yet clear who will work with it. Companies that have already committed to participating will be given a place on the newsfeed, according to Business Insider. This gives media a way to directly approach users with their content. However, it is not yet clear when the new functionality should be released, and Facebook itself does not want to release anything about Collections.
Business Insider does not yet know exactly how Collections will be designed. It is also not known how Facebook wants to earn money from it, or how it will divide income with the publishers: advertisements may become part of the functionality.
Collections seems like a way to compete with Snapchat’s Discover. Facebook also probably wants to make more distinction based on quality by posting content from media companies. The social networking site was criticized after Donald Trump’s victory in the United States for having influenced the election by spreading fake news. Facebook had already indicated that it will work on improving the quality of news that is shared on the site.
