Overwatch voted ‘Game of the Year’ at Game Awards

Blizzard’s Overwatch has won ‘Game of the Year’ at the annual Game Awards. The best mobile game, according to the jury, was Pokémon Go. Hideo Kojima was also awarded.

The Game Awards took place Thursday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. It was the third time the awards were presented; the jury consists of game publications such as Edge, Entertainment Weekly, Eurogamer, GameSpot, IGN, Wired and Kotaku. There were twenty categories in total, including prizes for best sound, independent game, rpg and multiplayer.

Game of the year was Overwatch, beating Doom, Inside, Titanfall 2 and Uncharted 4. Blizzard also won ‘Best Game Direction’ with Overwatch and that game also won at Multiplayer and Esports. Uncharted 4 did win in the Narrative category, while Doom was voted best action game and also had the best sound/soundtrack according to the voters. Pokémon Go won at ‘Mobile/handheld’ and Family.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the most anticipated game. Also nominated were Mass Effect: Andromeda, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn. A special prize went to Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima; he won the Industry Icon for his contributions to the game industry.

Game studios traditionally show some new trailers at the Game Awards. This time it included new footage from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Death Stranding and Mass Effect: Andromeda.
