VLC gets support for 360-degree images

VideoLAN has released a technical preview of VLC 3.0 with support for 360-degree images. The player will probably support the most popular virtual reality headsets next year.

VideoLAN publishes the technical preview under the name VLC 360. The player can display 360-degree video and images and supports the display modes zoom, little planet and reverse little planet. Navigation through the images is done via mouse and keyboard.

For now, only the Windows and macOS versions have been released. The final will be released on November 30. The development team also plans to release versions of VLC 360 for Android, iOS, and Xbox One, with the mobile versions able to use smartphones’ sensors to navigate 360-degree video.

Furthermore, VideoLAN speaks of the arrival of support for the Vive, Daydream, Oculus and OSVR in 2017. The developers also promise support for the reproduction of 3D audio, including for head tracking headphones. VideoLAN has had the implementation help from the creator of 360Cam, Giroptic.
