GlobalFoundries and STMicro consider building chip factory in France

GlobalFoundries and STMicro are considering building a chip factory in France. This is reported by Bloomberg sources. For this, the companies would like to use Chips Act support from the European Commission.

In the French factory, the two companies want according to Bloomberg making advanced, energy-efficient chips. It may be new FD-SOI chips† These are chips that can be used for 5G and security purposes in the automotive, iot and mobile sectors. The two companies are developing these chips with the research agency CEA and chip market supplier Soitec, both French organizations.

The sources emphasize that no final decisions have yet been made about the French factory. It’s also not clear how big it can get. To finance the construction, the companies want to use Chips Act support. With this Act, the European Commission wants to ensure that the European chip market doubles in size and becomes responsible for twenty percent of the global market.

The two companies have not confirmed whether the factory will be built. STMicro already has a factory in France, GlobalFoundries does not yet. Earlier, Intel indicated that it wanted to build a factory in Germany with the help of the Chips Act support.
