Yesterday, SourceForge released version 4.39 beta of the archiving program 7-Zip. This open source program can handle the compression formats zip, cab, rar, arj, lzh, chm, gzip, bzip2, z, tar, cpio, rpm and deb, but is of course specialized in the self-developed 7z format. With this format, they say a thirty to fifty percent better compression ratio can be achieved than with zip. Since version 4.31, there are separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows. Since the previous entry in the junk tracker, the following bug fixes have been made:

Changes in version 4.39 beta

  • Fixed a bug that plagued versions 4.33b through 4.38b where 7-Zip could not correctly compress files larger than 2 GB to 7z archive in fast/fastest modes (HC4 match finder).

Changes in version 4.38 beta

  • Some bugs were fixed
