Turkey blocks Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox and Github

The Turkish government has ordered a blockade of the storage services Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive, while Github is also inaccessible in the country. Initially, Google Drive was also blocked, but that has been partially undone.

The blockade has been in effect since Saturday and follows claims by the group Redhack that the email account of Energy and Raw Materials Minister Berat Albayarak has been hacked, Turkey Blocks writes. Several Turkish media also write about the blockade, including the technology site Dijitaller, which publishes the announcements about the blockades of the Turkish telecom and ICT authority BTK.

At least through some major internet providers in Turkey, TTNet, UyduNet and Turkcell, the services were no longer accessible. Users who use the internet via smaller providers could still access the services. Millions of users in the country are expected to be affected by the blockade. It happens regularly that Turkey blocks internet services and according to Turkey Blocks there are voices in the country to develop Turkish alternatives to American services.

It is unknown why Google Drive access has been partially restored. This could, for example, be related to Google’s infrastructure, where a block also prevents access to other services of the company, or due to Google’s compliance with requests from the Turkish government, insinuates Turkey Blocks.
