Google’s self-driving car was involved in collision with another car
One of Google’s self-driving cars has been involved in an accident, in which the vehicle was hit in the side by another car. The analysis shows that the Google car was not at fault; the driver of the other car ran a red light.
The 9 To 5 Google website was one of the first to report on the accident. The attached photo shows that Google’s self-driving car, a Lexus RX450h, was badly damaged; another car hit the side of the Google vehicle. The accident happened on the corner of El Camino Real and Calderon Ave, in Mountain View. No one was said to have been injured in the accident.
Google has since responded to the reports, confirming that a self-driving car was involved in the accident. According to the reading of the internet giant, another car drove through the red light, and the traffic light in front of the Google car was green. The company employee who was in the car had to take over the steering because of the car coming from the right, but was unable to avoid the collision.
Self-driving cars have been under a magnifying glass for some time now, mainly due to some accidents involving Tesla models. The feature on the Model S with which the car can partially drive independently, called Autopilot, appears to be unable to read the traffic situation well under all circumstances, as a result of which one recently died. Authorities are still investigating the accident.
In the case of Google, an accident was already noted earlier this year. Then the self-driving car was involved in a collision with a bus. Incidentally, that went at low speed, but it turned out that the Google vehicle was the culprit. Coincidentally, that accident also happened on the El Camino Real.
