AMD shows possible dual-gpu HD 7990 video card
At the final keynote at its AFDS event, AMD unveiled the FirePro W9000, which has 4tflops of processing power, more than the current HD 7970. However, while the W9000 was announced, AMD showed what may be the HD 7990.
During AMD’s closing keynote at its developers event, which Tweakers.net attended, chief technology officer Mark Papermaster announced a new video card, the FirePro W9000. This video card is said to have 4 teraflops of computing power, which is more than the 3.79tflops of computing power the HD 7970 squeezes out.
The W9000 may be based on a new GPU or it may be an overclocked Tahiti GPU as used for the HD 7970. The video card also has 6GB of memory and four displayport outputs.
However, while Papermaster was announcing the W9000, he was holding a completely different video card than the one shown on the slide behind him. The photo shows a hefty video card, with no fewer than three fans. It is unlikely that AMD will release such a cooled video card for professionals and we suspect that it had the HD 7990, the long-awaited dual-gpu video card that has to compete with Nvidia’s GTX 690. Papermaster didn’t say anything about the possible HD . 7990 .
