Intel acquires deep learning company Nervana Systems
Intel acquires Nervana Systems, an American start-up specializing in artificial intelligence and deep learning. Intel wants to use the knowledge it gains through the acquisition to improve its algorithms and hardware for artificial intelligence.
The acquisition amount has not been disclosed, but an investor tells ReCode that it concerns 408 million dollars. Converted that is 367 million euros. According to Intel, machine learning and deep learning are the most important methods to improve artificial intelligence. The chip manufacturer already makes chips for such applications, such as the Xeon Phi processors.
The American Nervana Systems was founded in 2014 and, according to Intel, is a forerunner when it comes to deep learning. Nervana’s intellectual property and expertise should help Intel further improve algorithms. Intel says it will leverage Nervana’s software expertise to optimize the Intel Math Kernel Library and integrate it into industry frameworks. During the Intel Developers Forum event starting next week, Intel will pay more attention to the developments surrounding artificial intelligence.
Intel announced a major reorganization in April. The PC market is shrinking and Intel wants to transform itself to stay profitable. The processor manufacturer is cutting 12,000 jobs and will focus more on growth markets, including deep learning.
