OwnCloud encounters problems after Founder’s Nextcloud fork
OwnCloud is surprised and disappointed with the arrival of the fork called Nextcloud. The fork comes from the founder and other ex-developers of the software. OwnCloud now says it has stopped getting loans in the US and has been forced to close its office there.
A month and a half ago, ownCloud founder Frank Karlitschek announced his departure from the company and many other developers followed in his wake. As it turns out, that was to target a fork. Despite the loss, ownCloud reports to continue to believe in its product and to compete with Nextcloud. The organization says it does not agree with Karlitschek’s criticism that the community should be strengthened. “In this regard, we have been working to establish the ownCloud Foundation. Its board will consist of seven members, including developers from the GitHub community, community users, and ownCloud delegates.”
OwnCloud claims to immediately feel the effects of the fork. Major lenders in the US are said to have turned off the money tap, forcing the business unit in the United States to shut down and eight people on the street. OwnCloud GmbH, the German subsidiary, would not have been affected by the decision. karlitschek reports via Twitter didn’t expect ownCloud to ‘collapse’ 12 hours after its announcement.
Earlier this week, Karlitschek announced its fork. He claimed that the software will be developed by a large part of the development team of ownCloud Inc. He also spoke of a reboot of the ownCloud company and project: “Nextcloud is a new way of rebalancing for a sustainable, open ecosystem with a focus on letting users manage their data.” In particular, in terms of transparency and removing barriers to contribute to the project, Nextcloud should improve on ownCloud.
Nextcloud should include support for Spreed.ME, an open source platform based on WebRTC for video conferencing and chats. In addition, the team behind nextCloud promises to support popular calendar and contacts apps.
