Rumor: Apple is working on a competitor for Google Home and Amazon Echo

According to rumors, Apple is working on a box with a speaker and microphone for the living room, just like the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Apple also plans to release a Siri SDK soon, so developers can develop apps that use the voice assistant.

The Siri speaker could be used to turn on music, listen to the news or set an alarm with voice commands. Presumably, Apple wants to make a competitor for the similar products from Amazon and Google. Amazon released its Echo speaker in late 2014, and Google announced its own Google Home alternative at its I/O developer event in May.

When the Apple speaker with Siri should be released is not clear, according to the rumors that 9to5Mac brings and which originate from sources from The Information, the device was already being worked on before Amazon released the Echo speaker.

The Siri sdk release would take place shortly. Apple is expected to open up the voice assistant to all developers at its WWDC developer event. Currently, only app makers who work closely with Apple can access the Siri API. Earlier it was rumored that Apple wants to bring Siri to OS X. That too will likely happen during WWDC. The developer event kicks off on June 13.
