Development studio id Software may be working on a new game in the Quake series. The studio refers to Quake in several job postings. Last week, Bethesda released the reboot of Doom, also made by id Software.

ZeniMax Media, the parent company of id Software, has several vacancies on its website. Both for id Software’s Dallas, Texas and Frankfurt offices, the company is looking for people to join a development team that will work on “legendary games like Doom and Quake.” This description can be seen in the vacancies for an Art Supervisor, Lead Gameplay Programmer and Senior Physics Programmer.

Quake came out in 1996 and Quake II appeared a year later. In particular, Quake III, which appeared in 1999, managed to gather a large fan base and was frequently played online. The next two games, 2005’s Quake 4 and 2007’s Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, were created by other development studios and failed to match the popularity of Quake III. In 2010, id Software released Quake Live, which could be played for free and for which extra content was available for a monthly fee. Since 2015, that game is no longer free and can only be played for a one-time payment via Steam on Windows.

Publisher Bethesda has revived several of id Software’s classics in recent years. That started in 2014 with the single player game Wolfenstein: The New Order, developed by MachineGames. Last week the reboot of Doom appeared, with both a single player campaign and a multiplayer component. Given the history of Quake as a multiplayer shooter, it seems likely that this will also be the focus of any new game.
