An Overclock.net user compared an engineering sample of the i7-6850K with an i7-5820K. Both chips have six cores and twelve threads and the overclocker benchmarked both CPUs at 4.2GHz. The Broadwell-E chip seems to be about ten to fifteen percent faster.

Forum member Maintenance Bot has his hands on the not yet officially announced Intel Broadwell-E processor and shared his experiences on Overclock.net. He benchmarked the CPU in 3D Mark and CineBench and compared the results to the Core i7-5820K of the current Haswell-E generation. That chip is clocked by default at 3.3GHz with boost to 3.6GHz. The i7-6850K has a base clock of 3.6GHz and boost to 3.8GHz. Both chips have a TDP of 140 watts. To compare the speed per MHz, he set the clock speed for both processors to 4.2GHz. According to Maintenance Bot, that is the maximum achievable of its i7-5820K. Whether the new i7-6850K has more to offer is not yet known.

The user then ran the 3DMark Firestrike and Cinebench R15 benchmarks. In 3DMark, the cpu is relevant to the physics score, the Broadwell-E processor scored 19065 points. That is about fifteen percent more than the 16598 points that the Haswell-E chip managed to achieve. In Cinebench the difference is slightly smaller. The i7-6850K scored 1311 points, ten percent higher than the i7-5820K which scored 1191 points. However, because it concerns an early sample of the processor, no firm conclusions can be drawn yet.

Intel hasn’t announced the Core i7-6850K yet, but the processor’s arrival is almost certain. It is one of four new Broadwell-E processors expected soon. At the beginning of April, a reference to the top model, the i7-6950X, appeared on the Intel website. Like the Haswell-E chips, the new CPUs for high-end systems fit in motherboards with the lga2011-3 socket. The Broadwell-E chips are made on a 14nm process, with Haswell-E that is still 22nm.
