Rock Band 4 will receive the option of synchronous online multiplayer through an update. The function should make it possible for players to compete against each other simultaneously via the internet. Currently, this is only possible asynchronously.

The update will be available for free to all Rock Band 4 owners. An exact date has not yet been announced, but online multiplayer should be available in the fall. A paid expansion for the game will also be released during the same period.

According to Harmonix, online multiplayer will work like the Quickplay mode, but adjustments have been made to make playing together over the Internet a “streamlined experience.” The developer will announce more during E3 in June.

Rock Band 4 came out on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 last year. A crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a PC version of Rock Band 4 failed to achieve its goal. Harmonix is also currently working on Rock Band VR for the Oculus Rift.
