HMD announces shockproof Nokia smartphone with four years of support
Nokia smartphone maker HMD Global announces a water and shock resistant Nokia phone: the XR20. The device will receive monthly security updates for four years, three years of Android OS upgrades and a three-year warranty.
The Nokia XR20 is the ‘robust’ brother of the X20. According to HMD, the device can withstand temperatures from 55 degrees to -22 degrees Celsius and can withstand a fall of 1.8 meters. This is partly due to the use of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and a sturdy housing, which is water resistant with an IP68 certification. This means that the device can function under water for half an hour at a depth of one and a half meters.
The device is equipped with a 6.67 “IPS screen with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels, with a brightness of up to 550cd/m². According to Nokia, the screen can be operated with wet hands and gloves. That screen does not extend all the way to the edge , the phone has a relatively large bezel all around.
Internally, the XR20 features a Snapdragon 480 5G soc with 6GB of ram and 128GB of flash storage, which can be expanded with a microSDXC card that uses a SIM slot. The phone has a 4630mAh battery that can be charged with an 18W charger or 15W wireless charger, both of which are not included.
The phone features a 48Mp camera, a 13Mp ultra wide-angle camera on the back and an 8Mp selfie camera in a hole in the screen. Filming is done at 1080p at 30fps. The phone has built-in noise reduction and image stabilization for action camera mode videos. The XR20 has a headphone jack.
To further emphasize the sustainability goal, HMD promises four years of monthly security updates for the XR20 and three years of OS updates for Android. The device comes with Android 11 at release. The phone also gets an extended warranty of three years and if the screen breaks within one year, it will be replaced for free.
The XR20 will be available in the Netherlands from August in two colors and in two configurations, one with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage for a suggested retail price of 499 euros and a variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage for 579 euros.
