Sony is considering making PSVR PC compatible in the future
Sony is considering adding PC compatibility to the PlayStation VR sometime in the future. This would give the Japanese company’s virtual reality headset an advantage over competitors HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, which are only for PCs.
The news comes through an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment vice president Masayasu Ito, conducted by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei. A Japanese-speaking Reddit user translated the relevant part for Western readers. “Nothing is going to happen in the short term,” he warns. Nevertheless, he goes on to say: “Because the PlayStation 4 has internal hardware similar to that of PCs, the opportunity is there. But at the moment we are concentrating on games and we are not ready to make an announcement. But I would say that there will be expansions to other areas.”
Although the PlayStation VR has an advantage over the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the two do have screens with higher resolutions, for example. Both offer 1080 by 1200 pixels per eye. PSVR offers users 960 by 1080 per eye. This may also be an explanation for the lower price of Sony’s virtual reality headset.
The PlayStation VR should be released in October this year. The bundle with all necessary hardware will probably cost 499 euros in the Benelux. Competitor Oculus Rift is now available for 699 euros and the HTC Vive will follow in May for 899 euros. Those prices do not include things like taxes and shipping costs.
