Apple suspends iOS 9.3 update for older devices – update

Apple has halted the update to iOS 9.3 after users complained about a problem with their device’s activation. In some cases, on older devices, iOS asks for the password of an account different from the current user’s.

Apple acknowledges the problem on a support page and offers several tips for a workaround. In some cases, it is an account over which the current user has no control, so the password for it is unknown. After the update, iOS asks for the password of the account with which the iPhone went through the setup first.

Users who already have an unactivated iOS device after the update can activate the device through iTunes using their own account. Apple also recommends resetting a forgotten password and removing the Activation Lock via iCloud.com.

Until Apple has a final fix, it will suspend the update to iOS 9.3. That should come within a few days, the manufacturer says in a statement to Apple site iMore. Apple released iOS 9.3 on Monday, right after its own event to showcase the iPhone SE and smaller iPad Pro.

Update, 08:03: The new build is now out, says iClarified.
