Nokia brings OZO virtual reality camera on the market for 55,000 euros

Nokia announces that the OZO, a professional camera for recording VR videos, is for sale for 55,000 euros. The spherical device has eight cameras, each recording in 2k resolution. The images are compiled into 8k videos.

Nokia announced the VR camera in July last year and is now marketing the device in Europe. The Finnish company is targeting professional companies that want to make virtual reality videos. The spherical camera has eight cameras with the same number of lenses, which have an angle of view of 195 degrees. The sensors record in 2k2k format, presumably 2048×2048 pixels. The images will be merged into ‘8k x 4k’ videos, probably measuring 8192×4096 pixels.

The device weighs 4.2 kg and can be used wirelessly. For example, the OZO can be hung under a drone to take images from the air. The camera saves recordings in a raw format to an SSD module with a storage capacity of 500GB. That’s good for 45 minutes of filming. The shooting speed is 30fps. To view the results, a VR headset is required, such as an Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR or the PlayStation VR.

Simultaneously with the market launch, Nokia is announcing partnerships with Deluxe and The Foundry. The former is a company that provides post-production of video images and will add the processing of images from the OZO to its service package. The Foundry is maker of, among other things, the NUKE software and that package will soon be able to handle 3D images made with the Nokia OZO.
