Xbox One will be able to run universal Windows apps this summer
The Xbox One will be able to run apps made for Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform later this year. In addition, the Redmond-based company plans to merge its Xbox Store and Windows Store into a download store.
The functionality of the Xbox One to run UWP apps will be available this summer, Microsoft promised during the Game Developer Conference keynote, Business Insider reports. This gives Xbox users access to all apps that have been developed according to this method and are in the Store.
At the same time, Microsoft is bringing together the Xbox Store for Xbox downloads and the Windows Store. The Windows Store now works on Windows 10 and Windows 10 mobile devices. The merger will allow developers to sell apps to eighteen million more users than they do today.
The Redmond-based company previously announced that it wants to merge its platforms and previously said that UWP apps should run on the Xbox One. However, it had not yet mentioned a specific period when that should be possible.
