Basemark and Crytek Announce VRScore Benchmark
Crytek and Basemark jointly announced VRScore. Companies can get started right away with the virtual reality benchmark software by participating in the development program. A consumer version will be released in June.
According to the makers, the goal of VRScore is to set a benchmark that is based on an engine that is actually used in games. Benchmark software maker Basemark therefore teamed up with Crytek, so that the CryEngine 3 could be used for the software package to measure performance in the field of virtual reality display.
The software has been in development for the past nine months and is not yet ready. Companies that want to get started with VRScore can participate in the development program for a fee, which gives them access to all development versions of the software. The final version of the package should be released in June and there will be a free version for consumers, with limited functionality. In addition, there will be a paid Pro package without restrictions, the price is not yet known.
VRScore offers support for all known headsets, such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and OSVR from Razer. The software can measure the performance of a PC and thus indicate its suitability for displaying VR images. Basemark also comes with the VRScore Trek, a device that can perform measurements on the headsets and thus measure the latency between the display for the left and right eye.
The processor, graphics card and headset are all assigned a score after a benchmark with VRscore. An online database will be created where users can compare these VR scores.
Futuremark is also working on a benchmark program for virtual reality. VRMark is already available in 3DMark 2016 beta. Steam released a tool in February to measure the performance of PCs in displaying virtual reality images.
