Opera has released a developer version of its desktop browser that eliminates the need to install an extension to block ads. This feature is standard in the browser and can be enabled or disabled by users.

According to the Opera team, this way of adblocking is much faster than extensions, because web engine-level ads are blocked the first time a URL is requested. It would also improve the security of browsing. The Norwegian company claims to be the first to provide a major browser with a built-in adblocker. In addition, this method would be on average 45 percent faster than when using Google Chrome with AdBlock Plus. Advertisements and trackers are blocked using EasyList’s lists.

The feature is disabled by default and will prompt users on a page of ads if they should be blocked. Once the blocker is enabled, it can be disabled on individual pages, after which the browser adds it to the list of exceptions. It is also possible to perform a speed test on a page. With that, the browser loads the page first with ads and then without, after which the results are compared side by side.

An Opera spokesperson told Reuters that the company sees no contradiction in adding a standard adblocking feature to its browser, while relying heavily on ads itself. The technology would also ensure that advertising companies listen to the wishes of consumers.

The new version of the browser is mainly aimed at developers and early adopters. The company also plans to make the feature widely available for computers and phones at a later date. According to Reuters, the Opera browser is currently the fifth largest with 60 million active monthly users. The new version of the browser is available from the developer page.
