Modder integrates SD card reader into floppy drive
Mud Dr. Moddnstine has converted a 1995 IBM Aptiva into a modern PC, while retaining as many original details as possible. The latter, of course, required a floppy disk drive that meets current standards.
The 3.5″ floppy drive is coupled with a 5.25″ floppy drive plug, combined with a USB adapter. Thus obtained Dr. Moddnstine a ‘modern’ floppy drive. The mechanism for opening the protective cover of a 3.5″ floppy disk also still functions. In this way, an apparently real 3.5″ floppy can be slid into the disk drive, after which the cover slides open and data can then be sent via some ingenuity can be read from the sd card slid into the floppy.
Aside from converting the floppy disk and the drive, the modder also spent a lot of time rebuilding the entire case to accommodate today’s hardware. It took a little more than just a soldering iron and pliers. Welding, for example, also fell under the applied skills, as can be seen from the many photos of the project on Imgur.
Also found Dr. Moddnstine put in an ugly, cheap-looking 5.25″ bay adapter for USB and io/card readers. So he incorporated an extra USB 3.0 port and audio connections into the front of the DVD drive.
Furthermore, the classic case now contains an Intel Core i7-6700K processor, which is cooled by a Corsair H80i 77.0 CFM water cooling system. All that is on an Asus Maximus VIII Gene micro-atx board with two 8GB Corsair ddr4 ram. As a video card there is an Asus Radeon R9 390 in the build and the power supply is a Corsair RM 750W.
A twenty minute video explaining the build can be found here.
