Developer New World Interactive has announced that it will release a new version of its game Insurgency in 2017. The tactical shooter that once started as a mod of Half-Life 2 is this time made with Unreal Engine 4.

For the new version of the game, Insurgency will be subtitled Sandstorm. Insurgency: Sandstorm is primarily developed for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but will also be released for Windows, OS X, and Linux. According to the studio, work is underway to create a seamless transition from Insurgency to Insurgency: Sandstorm on PC.

In addition to the graphical updates that are the result of Unreal Engine 4, the new version of the game also includes a few new features. For example, there will be a campaign mode in which the story of a group of characters is followed. That story begins with the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and continues to the present day. Furthermore, according to New World, work is also being done on split-screen multiplayer on consoles and a lot of attention is also being paid to competitive multiplayer and esports. The systems for the latter two will be released first as a beta for the current version of Insurgency.

Insurgency released the mod for Half-Life 2 two years ago. The tactical shooter became popular quite quickly, and New World claims the original game already has about two million players. The original game has sixteen playing fields and supports mods. Sandstorm is released in conjunction with publisher Focus Home Interactive, known for publishing Styx: Master of Shadows, Blood Bowl 2 and the recent Farming Simulator games. Details about the playing fields and weapons in Sandstorm are not yet known.

The current version of Insurgency costs 14.99 euros. How much will be charged for the Sandstorm version is still unknown. It has not yet been announced when the game will be released in 2017.
