Panasonic has announced the DX900: a UHDTV with HDR support that runs Firefox OS. The manufacturer also offers an update for Firefox OS. In addition, Panasonic comes with a player for ultra-HD Blu-ray discs.

Compliant with the UHD Alliance’s ‘ultra hd premium’ specification, the DX900 also supports features such as displaying 10bit color depth and the BT.2020 color space, while also supporting the smpte ST2084 standard for hdr.

The television has local dimming and uses a honeycomb structure in the distribution of the lighting zones. With this, the DX900 could provide a relatively large surface with the maximum brightness 1000cd/m2, Panasonic claims.

The TV runs Firefox OS, which makes it clear that the development of this software for TVs continues, which was unclear here in the field of smartphones. Panasonic reports that an update to this OS should be released later in the year that will give users new ways to discover web apps. Vimeo, among others, has already promised to come up with a web app for the OS. In addition, the update brings support for ‘send to TV’ to the TVs. It allows users to display content from their Android device on the TV through the Firefox browser. The DX900 will be available in spring 2016 in 65″ and 58″ sizes.

At the same time as the new TV, Panasonic announces its first Blu-ray player that can play ultra-HD discs. In addition to UHD Blu-ray, the UB900 can play a variety of audio formats, including wav, flac, mp3, aac, wma, dsd, and alac.
