Panasonic announced the Lumix TZ80 and TZ100 cameras at CES in Las Vegas. Where the TZ80 is a successor to the TZ70, the TZ100 is a new member of the segment, which has a 1″ sensor and 10x optical zoom.

The Panasonic Lumix TZ80 builds on the TZ70, but is equipped with a new sensor with 4k video functionality. Where Panasonic took a step back from 18 to 12 megapixels with the TZ70, the TZ80 is back at 18 megapixels, according to its own words thanks to improved image quality. With a 30x optical zoom, the zoom range is unchanged from its predecessors, with an equivalent range of 24-720mm. Like many recent Panasonic cameras, the TZ80 can film in 4k resolution at 25fps in MP4 format. The ‘4k Photo’ functionality, with which 8-megapixel photos can be distilled from video recordings, is also present. The focusing speed is said to be smoother and more accurate than its predecessor and the screen is now touch-sensitive.

The TZ100 is a new model in the range. Although it belongs to the TZ series and is therefore in fact a travel zoom camera, it is quite unique on the inside, thanks to its relatively large 1″ sensor. There are more cameras with a large zoom range in the 1″ segment, but those are many times larger and therefore fall more into the bridge camera category. The TZ100 is only slightly larger than the TZ80 and previous cameras in the same series and therefore particularly compact. Nevertheless, a 10x optical zoom lens is hidden inside the body, with an equivalent range of 25 to 250mm. The wide-angle mode starts with a brightness of f/2.8 and increases to f/5.9.

Like the TZ80, the TZ100 can film in 4k and shoot photos at 30fps in 4k Photo mode. The camera would focus in 0.1 second and, just like the TZ80, it contains 49 different points on which focus can be made, among other things by means of the touch-sensitive screen. It is also possible to save several shots with different focus points from one photo, in order to be able to choose the right point afterwards. Like the TZ80 and TZ70, the TZ100 is equipped with a small 0.2″ electronic viewfinder. It can shoot up to 10 photos per second and the fastest shutter speed is 1/16,000th of a second, thanks to an electronic shutter. most other TZ cameras also support the raw format.

The TZ80 has a suggested retail price of 499 euros. Its predecessor, the TZ70, remains in the range for the time being. The new TZ100 will be priced at 699 euros. Both cameras are available in black and silver, and are expected in March.
