‘Hdr display Red Dead Redemption 2 has been significantly improved with update’
The HDR rendering of Red Dead Redemption 2 has been greatly improved by the recently released update for the game. That concludes Digital Foundry. According to the website, it is a major improvement over the original HDR display, which was disappointing.
Adam Fairclough, a part-time employee of Digital Foundry and an HDR expert who also tests games for their HDR rendering on the YouTube channel HdtvTest, along with colleagues from Digital Foundry note that Update 1.09 will increase the HDR rendering in Red Dead Redemption. 2 has improved significantly.
In the patch notes, Rockstar writes that a new HDR calibration menu has been added, as well as two HDR modes: HDR Cinematic and Game HDR. Fairclough notes that HDR cinematic is the same as the old rendering, which he previously described as ‘fake HDR’. In addition, the output is derived from sdr image where the world is not rendered with any form of increased dynamic range. In fact, that’s an 8-bit SDR display inserted into a 10-bit HDR space. This led to a dull display with a clearly reduced color saturation, few high contrasts and no high peak brightness.
