Collaborator and ownCloud release development version of LibreOffice Online

Collabora and ownCloud have released CODE: a distribution consisting of LibreOffice Online and ownCloud Server. For now, it is an experimental virtual machine for the browser version of the open office suite, intended for developers.

CODE stands for Collabora Online Development Edition and Collabora has released the 706MB file for this. The combination of LibreOffice Online and ownCloud Server is released as a virtual machine and not made available as an online service because it is still a very early version. According to the organization, this way companies and developers can already get a glimpse of the possibilities and can experiment with them. In the long run, hosting companies could, for example, offer the browser version of LibreOffice as a service.

The suite consists of Writer, Spreadsheet and Presentation and users can create and edit documents. Other functionality that other online office suites do have, such as the possibility to collaborate on documents, is not there yet, but should come. Collabora therefore sees the release as a first step and does not provide support for it, for example.

Collabora has been the driving force behind LibreOffice Online since the beginning of this year, together with IceWarp. The British company also has its own CloudSuite and has also entered into a partnership with ownCloud, which should result in a commercial product in 2016.
