Rumor: The next iPad Air won’t get 3D Touch yet
The successor to the iPad Air 2 will probably not get a screen with 3D Touch. For the time being, Apple would not be able to produce the technology that recognizes how hard the screen is pressed for larger screen sizes.
Currently, only the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have 3D Touch, which works with an extra layer of sensors in the screen that can measure pressure. According to sources from AppleInsider, Apple is unable to apply existing 3D Touch technology to larger screen sizes and would only be able to do so after the introduction of the iPhone 7.
If Apple keeps to its annual schedule, the iPhone 7 will be released in the fall of 2016. Apple is likely to release the iPad Air 3 in the spring of 2016. Last September, when Apple introduced the iPad Pro and iPad Mini 4, there was no new version of the Air tablet with 9.7″ screen. The current iPad Air 2 came on the market in October 2014.
AppleInsider claims the information comes from a source that has historically provided accurate information about future Apple products. On Tuesday, an analyst from KGI already stated that Apple would have problems producing a 3D Touch screen for the iPad. Earlier rumors stated that the iPad Air 3 would get the technology from the iPhone 6s models.
