Rumor: HTC will release its first smartwatch in a few months
HTC will release a smartwatch in February, if the plans do not change. That reports the well-known ‘smartphone delicious’ @evleaks on Twitter. The manufacturer has been hinting at the release of a smartwatch for a long time, but it hasn’t happened until now.
The tweet from @evleaks seems to indicate that HTC will put the watch in its One series. The manufacturer uses that name for its more luxurious smartphones. HTC released some devices outside of smartphones last year, but they dropped it in its Re series, such as the Re camera and Grip. The latter is a fitness tracker that was supposed to be released this summer, but the release has since been delayed twice.
HTC has been talking about the possibility of a smartwatch for several years and the most recent rumor talks about a round one. That watch’s codename, Halfbeak, would indicate that it would run Android Wear. There are various operating systems for smartwatches: Samsung uses Tizen for the Gear S2, among others, while Alcatel One Touch uses its own platform for its smartwatches and Pebble and Apple also work with their own operating systems.
The Taiwanese manufacturer reportedly wanted to release a smartwatch last year, but declined. So far @evleaks has not released any details or images about the watch. The Twitterer has often shown in the past that he has good sources at HTC and was the first to release images of, among others, the One M7 and One M8.
