Apple delivers more iPhones and fewer iPads
Apple has delivered more iPhones, but fewer iPads in recent months. The number of iPhones came in at around 48 million, while Apple shipped less than ten million iPads for the first time since the spring of 2011.
The quarterly figures include the opening weekend of iPhone 6s and 6s Plus sales. Those devices came out at the end of September. The number of iPhones delivered rose from 39.2 million to 48 million. Apple is likely to remain second in the smartphone market, behind Samsung. The suspected number three Huawei previously announced on Tuesday that it has delivered around 27 million smartphones in the summer.
The deliveries of iPads are less. The number dropped again by several tens of percent and is below ten million for the first time since the release of the iPad 2. Until now, Apple has maintained that the declines were due to users spending longer with iPads and replacing them less often. Apple will disclose the numbers to investors late Tuesday evening and will likely discuss whether that claim still holds. Deliveries of the iPad mini 4 are included, but the larger iPad Pro is not yet for sale. This will probably have to ensure new growth in the coming months.
Mac shipments grew slightly at 3.6 percent. Until six months ago, the number of Macs delivered grew much faster, so it seems that the largest growth has ended. Mainly thanks to the iPhone, Apple once again recorded record figures in terms of turnover and profit. The turnover amounted to 51.5 billion dollars, or 46.6 billion euros. About 62 percent of sales come from the iPhone. Profit was $11.1 billion, an increase of nearly 30 percent.
