Rumor: Sony buys Toshiba’s camera sensor division
Sony is said to be in negotiations with Toshiba about acquiring one of its divisions. It would be the branch that makes camera sensors, for which Sony would have an amount of 165 million dollars, converted about 150 million euros.
The rumors come from Reuters news agency, which claims to have sources. Talks have been going on between the two companies for some time, although no final agreement has yet been reached. However, there would already be an offer from Sony of 150 million euros on the table, which would have been accepted by Toshiba. As a result, the acquisition is expected to be completed in the short term, according to Reuters.
The deal would allow Sony to acquire a factory for cmos sensors and use Toshiba’s technology. The factory in question is located in the south of Japan, in the city of Oita. After divesting cmos production, Toshiba would like to withdraw from this market altogether, Reuters sources say. This decision is said to have been prompted by a restructuring of the company: it was previously revealed that Toshiba has exaggerated its profit figures for years, which led to the CEO’s resignation.
Sony has a strong market position in camera sensors, with a market share of approximately 40 percent. The cmos sensors are used by many smartphone manufacturers and for Sony’s own camera series, among others. A takeover of Tohiba’s sensors division would thus further increase its market share. Both companies have not responded to the Reuters report.
