Apple must pay university 206 million euros after patent infringement

Apple has to pay the University of Wisconsin $ 234 million in damages, which translates to 206 million euros. That was decided by a jury court, after it was previously determined that Apple infringed a patent of the university.

The lawsuit against Apple was brought by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the branch of the American university that licenses patents. According to Reuters news agency, the jury of the court in Wisconsin, where the case was filed, decided on Friday that Apple must pay an amount of 206 million euros, which is also considerably less than the amount the university had asked for.

The lawsuit concerned a 1998 patent that describes a technique to increase the efficiency of computer chips by predicting which instructions should be executed. According to the University of Wisconsin, Apple is infringing that patent in its A7, A8 and A8X soc. These are built into the Phone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air and iPad Mini 2, among others.

Earlier this week, Judge William Conley ruled that Apple is infringing on the patents of the American university. However, Conley also said that the Cupertino company did not knowingly infringe intellectual property, which ultimately resulted in lower damages. the University of Wisconsin had asked for $400 million in damages. Nevertheless, it is possible that the final amount will still increase: there is still a case against Apple because patents have also been infringed with the A9-soc.

Apple said it would appeal the jury’s decision. The Cupertino company had previously tried to invalidate the patent used in the lawsuit.
