All versions of Star Citizen now accessible to every investor
To celebrate Star Citizen reaching 1 million investors, the full game is available to anyone who has invested money in the space simulator. Players who previously only had access to an alpha version, now also have access to betas and the release version.
The game’s 1 million ‘Star Citizens’ have put together about $93 million, or $82 million, into the game. That amounts to an average of 82 euros per person. Not only do they get various degrees of access to the game for that money, but they also get in-game money and ships back for their real money. With immediate effect, the different access levels of the game have been wiped off the table; if users have access to the game, they can access any version.
Investors who have invested more than the minimum amount in the game will receive different amounts of in-game money in return. For example, anyone with an alpha access package will get 10,000 credits, and those with the Arena Commander Pass will get 5,000 credits. Players can now get access to both the current alpha and all versions of the game that follow for at least 43.56 euros.
The Kickstarter game from Chris Roberts, the man behind Freelancer and the Wing Commander games from the 90s, is currently still in its alpha phase. Version 1.3.0 of that alpha should be released soon. It introduces multi-player multiplayer, functional buggies, improved graphics and new weapons for spaceships. Subsequently, version 2.0 of the alpha will be released. It introduces multi-crew spaceships, 38 playable missions, and the ability to exit the spaceship and move around on foot.
Star Citizen’s single player mode, called Squadron 42, features Hollywood stars Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and Mark Hamill, among others. In addition to their voices, their entire appearances are also integrated into the game via motion capture. Star Citizen has been in development since 2012 and has broken records with the amounts raised. The game will be a combination of space travel and combat and first-person action in an mmo universe. The single player mode can also be played in co-op. The game runs on a modified version of the CryEngine and must also support the Oculus Rift. The release version of the game is to be released in 2016.
