Microsoft shows CardBoard alternative ‘VR Kit’
Microsoft shows on its Russian site a ‘VR Kit’: a holder for a smartphone that has lenses so that the viewer can view virtual reality content. Microsoft wants to promote the making of VR games with the ‘VR Kit’.
Microsoft has posted the image of the ‘VR Kit’ on a Russian TechDays site. It can be seen that the viewer contains a smartphone and must be held by the user, but many more details cannot be made out from the photo. In any case, the VR Kit seems to be an alternative to Google’s Cardboard: a viewer made of cardboard that fits a smartphone and of which Google has released the design.
Microsoft’s VR Kit seems initially intended for developers to experience vr games. The company is encouraging developers to make such games during a hackathon on October 17, the Russian page says. During that event, not only will the best VR app be chosen in the field of gaming, but also in the field of education and business use. Microsoft also says it will make ready-made tools for development available.
