Disney invests in developing virtual reality content
Disney will spend millions developing more content for virtual reality hardware. The company invests in Jaunt, a start-up that is involved in making tools for VR glasses, for example.
In an investment round led by Disney, Jaunt has raised $65 million, it announced. That is converted about 58 million euros. With the money, the company wants to scale up its production of content for virtual reality applications. Investments are also made in the 360-degree camera being developed by Jaunt; this should make it easier to shoot video images that can be used with VR glasses. Finally, Jaunt is still working on a platform to deliver content on VR hardware.
Disney itself has not given a reason for the multi-million investment, but it is clear that the company sees potential in virtual reality. The company may want to bring its content, such as movies and games, to VR hardware. Nothing is known about such plans at the moment. It will probably become more clear when Jaunt actually launches its VR platform.
Jaunt has already attracted the interest of several media companies. For example, the German ProSiebenSat.1 and the British Sky are investing in the start-up.
