The European Commission has announced that it will invest 1.5 billion euros in an EU research and innovation program for the period 2018 to 2020. The hope is that the public and private sector in the EU will increase their investments in research into ai.

The amount of up to 1.5 billion euros in the coming 2.5 years will be invested in Horizon 2020, the largest research and innovation program in the EU. The Commission therefore hopes that an additional amount of 2.5 billion euros will be made available in the context of existing public-private partnerships, such as in the field of robotics. Ultimately, this should lead to a joint investment from the public and private sector of a total of 20 billion euros to 2020.
According to the European Commissioner for the Digital Market, Market Andrus Ansip, Europe is facing new challenges through the emergence of artificial intelligence . He wants the challenges to be tackled jointly by Europe ‘to ensure that ai becomes a success’. Ansip also wants the EU to be a leader in the development of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the Commissioner says that the Commission gives researchers an extra impetus with the additional investment and enables them to develop the next generation of AI technologies and applications. The Commissioner would like to see improvements in the investment climate.
In order to maximize the impact of investment, the Commission is starting work with Norway and 24 EU Member States to draw up a coordinated plan on artificial intelligence, end of this year. This is partly based on a declaration recently signed by these countries with which the countries have agreed to cooperate on the development of ai.
The European Commission did not enter into the announcement of the plans. to a recent call from European scientists to set up a large European center that focuses on research into artificial intelligence. The researchers are concerned that without such a joint center a brain drain is threatening because the Europe is lagging behind China and the United States.
