Canon shows portable VR viewer with ‘QHD resolution per eye’
Canon showed off a device for displaying virtual reality video at an event in New York. Unlike most headsets, users don’t have to wear them on their head, but hold them on their own. The resolution would be ‘QHD per eye’.
The device Canon showed at its Expo is square and has two handles on the bottom that allow users to hold the display. The part that the user has to hold against his head contains two lenses and a rim to prevent the passage of ambient light. There would be three lens elements per eye.
Uploadvr reports that Canon showed a five minute demonstration video shot with an array of Canon cameras. One of the images that have appeared shows a schematic image of that VR camera system with six lenses. The video would be streamed at a resolution of 5600×2800 pixels and no positional head tracking would have been used. Furthermore, the site reports that users reported the QHD screen resolution of 2560×1440 pixels per eye, but there is a chance that the entire screen had this resolution. There are no further details about the device yet and Canon has not officially reported anything about it.
