WhatsApp has reached the number of 900 million monthly users. If the current growth continues, the chat service will reach 1 billion in six months. Despite the increased competition, growth does not seem to be over yet.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum reports breaking the limit of 900 million monthly users on Facebook, where he receives congratulations from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. After WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in February 2014, many users threatened to leave the instant messaging service, but the growth figures do not show that effect.

WhatsApp reached 800 million in April and six months later, the service added 100 million. With this growth, the service will reach 1 billion monthly users in another six months, although the growth has fluctuated in the past. WhatsApp calls a user active if they have sent at least one message in the past month. It is not clear whether there is a difference in growth in terms of region and it is also unknown how active users are. WhatsApp faces increased competition from Telegram, among others, but many users probably have multiple messengers on their device.
