Rumor: Samsung will release Galaxy S10 phones on March 8
Samsung will showcase its Galaxy S10 phones on February 20 and release it on March 8. Gizmodo reports that. That is a week before the Mobile World Congress telephone fair in Barcelona, where Samsung has often shown new Galaxy S models.
Gizmodo claims that Samsung Unpacked, the name for the presentation of devices from the Galaxy S series, among others, will take place on the Wednesday before the opening of Mobile World Congress on Monday. That is earlier than last times, when Samsung held a press conference on Sunday evening prior to the stock market. The release does match the timing of past years; Samsung released its Galaxy S phone more often in March.
In addition, Gizmodo says it has prizes. The smallest version, a device with a 5.8 “screen without curvatures on the side, would cost GBP 669 in a configuration with 128GB storage. The Galaxy S9 has a suggested retail price of GBP 699, with 64GB storage. The regular S10 with a 6.1” screen would cost £799, while the larger S10+ would start at £899, with a 1TB version for £1299. That 1TB variant sounds believable; Apple released an iPad Pro with that configuration last month.
Gizmodo also says to have heard from sources that various previous rumors are correct, such as that the devices will have a screen with a hole in it for the front camera. This makes the iris scanner a thing of the past, because it would take up more space. There is an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner behind the screen. That is a different technique than the optical fingerprint scanner of, for example, the OnePlus 6T and Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Those two phones released this fall will work with a camera behind the screen to see the fingerprint, while the S10 will work with sound waves to recognize the fingerprint.
