Mortal Kombat 11 will be released in 2019 on April 23 for PC, Xbox One, PS4 and the Switch. The game was announced at The Game Awards in Los Angeles. NetherRealm Studios is hosting an event on January 17, where it will tell more about the gameplay.

In the announcement trailer, NetherRealm says that those who pre-order from December 7 will receive access to the beta test and the character Shao Kahn as a bonus. Whether the closed beta will remain available until the official release date is not yet known. It is well known that players can customize and tweak characters to their liking. This option to customize the characters is similar to the Gear system from the Injustice games, also developed by NetherRealm Studios.

The last iteration of the popular franchise was Mortal Kombat X. It was released on April 7 for iOS and a week later for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Android version came out in May. Between the release of MKX and MK11, on May 11, 2017, Injustice 2 came out. This game uses the same gameplay as the more recent Mortal Kombat games, but for the most part features characters from Detective Comics, such as Superman and Batman. The exceptions are Raiden, Subzero, Hellboy, and the Ninja Turtles. These are available as DLC.
