Google will open its .dev top-level domain, which until now has only been used by the search giant itself, to the public early next year. Developers can register their coveted domain name from January 16.

The .dev top-level domain gives software developers the ability to securely showcase their projects. The domain is natively on the HSTS preload list, which means that .dev websites use a secure HTTPS connection by default.

The registration of a .dev domain takes place in three phases. The period between January 16 and February 19 is reserved for developers who hold a registered trademark. This is to prevent malicious people from widely hijacking and misusing .dev domains with an existing brand name. From February 19 to 28, there will be the Early Access phase. During this period you can purchase a .dev domain name early but at an increased price. After February 28, anyone can register a .dev address at no additional cost. Google hasn’t announced any pricing yet.
