Release of new Apple AirPods seems closer after Bluetooth SIG approval

The release of new AirPods from Apple seems to be getting closer now that the Bluetooth SIG has approved two versions of the new earbuds. The inspection also shows that the AirPods will work with Bluetooth 5.0.

The earphones have type numbers A2031 and A2032, Bluetooth SIG states. The approval of the steering committee usually takes place before the release of a product, but usually not far in advance. That indicates that the release of the new earphones is close. The first version of AirPods came out around two years ago.

It is unknown what the new earphones will offer except bluetooth 5.0. Patently Apple reports that Apple has expanded the definition of AirPods trademark in Europe to include some elements. The brand now includes categories such as health monitoring sensors, watches and games. It is unknown if all those elements will return in new AirPods.

Apple has held two events in recent months, one for the announcement of the new iPhones and one for the iPad Pro and MacBook Air. AirPods were not discussed, presumably because the accompanying wireless charging mat AirPower is not yet ready. The box of the new AirPods should work with that. The AirPower is expected to be released in 2018, according to Apple’s most recent statement, but it is unknown if that will happen.
