Isp blocks access to Elsevier in protest against lost piracy case
A court has ordered the Swedish provider Bahnhof to block some internet domains after claims by publisher Elsevier of copyright infringement. In response, Bahnhof blocks access to Elsevier.
Bahnhof blocks, among others, sci-hub.tw, sci-hub.mu, sci-hub.se and libgen.io by order of the court. Elsevier demanded that the sites be blocked, because they would infringe the copyright of the publisher. The CEO of the ISP informs Torrentfreak that he will not appeal. This would make no sense because the court would be biased, in favor of rightholders.
Instead, Bahnhof has decided to block Elsevier.com of its own accord. Customers who want to visit the site will see a page with information about the case. In addition, the isp blocks access to its own site for visitors coming from the court’s network.
Bahnhof was founded in 1994 and has repeatedly opposed measures such as data retention, site blocks and taking material offline. WikiLeaks, among others, has temporarily rented server space from the company in the past.
