Apple ships slightly more iPhones but fewer iPads and Macs
Apple shipped 46.89 million iPhones in the quarter, slightly more than the 46.67 million from the same period last year. The average selling price of a delivered iPhone did go up and Apple’s quarterly revenue increased by 20 percent.
Deliveries of the iPhone are therefore stable again, just like last quarter. The average selling price of a delivered iPhone rose by 28.3 percent from 618 to 793 dollars, again making it clear that customers buy many relatively expensive models. As a result, quarterly sales from iPhones increased by 29 percent.
Apple shipped 9.7 million iPads in the three months, down from last year’s 10.33 million. The average selling price also fell, from 468 dollars to 422 dollars. As a result, quarterly sales from the iPad fell by 15 percent. On the Mac, shipments fell a fraction of 2 percent, but the average selling price increased 5.1 percent to $1,399, boosting sales by 3 percent.
Total revenue for the quarter increased 20 percent to 62.9 billion, partly as revenue from services, such as Apple Music and iTunes, and other products, such as the Apple Watch, grew 17 and 31 percent, respectively. Apple’s services are now close to $10 billion. Total profit was $14.13 billion.
For the coming quarter, Apple expects to generate between $89 billion and $93 billion in revenue. Last year, revenue for that quarter was $88.3 billion, making Apple cautious about its forecast given the release of new iPhones, iPad Pros, a new MacBook Air and a Mac mini.
