In a new contract, Google has obliged manufacturers of Android smartphones with at least 100,000 activations to patch vulnerabilities within three months for two years. From January 31 next year, all devices must comply with this.

According to The Verge, the conditions are in a new agreement that is necessary because of the adjustments that Google had to make from the EU, so that manufacturers in Europe now have to pay for installing the Play Store, among other things.

Currently, a manufacturer must release the updates for at least two years for 75 percent of the models and from January 31, every phone must be provided with updates for at least two years. Manufacturers must also implement a patch within three months. Google is not demanding about operating system upgrades to a new version.

Google said earlier that this obligation was coming. Many manufacturers now promise to provide smartphones with updates for three years. Rugged smartphones get five years of updates if they’re in the Android Enterprise Recommended program.
