Intel announces retirement for Lakefield CPUs year after launch

Intel has announced the end of the two Lakefield socs the company introduced last year. Companies can order the chips until October. Deliveries will stop in April next year. The Comet Lake-U and Ice Lake-U series will also be discontinued.

The Lakefield CPUs were Intel’s first processors with a big.Little design. These had a single, fast Sunny Cove core and four frugal Trement cores. In addition, the socs had a Gen11 GPU. In the Lakefield series, Intel released a Core i5-L16G7 and a Core i3-L13G4. Both socs are now discontinued.

With the Lakefield chips, Intel aimed at the market for economical devices that do not require a lot of processing power. However, the processors turned out not to be that popular among laptop and tablet manufacturers. The Lakefield chips appeared in devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Book S and the ThinkPad X1 Fold. The Microsoft Surface Neo tablet should also have been equipped with it. Intel is expected to announce Alder Lake this year, with processors that also get a big.Little design.

Comet Lake-U and Ice Lake-U processors will also be discontinued. Most of these processors have the same deadlines as the two Lakefield CPUs. Only the i7-10810U, -10610U, i5-10310U and Celeron 5205U will be delivered a little longer. These chips will be delivered until the end of July. The Comet Lake and Ice Lake CPUs are slightly older than the Lakefield CPUs. Intel announced these chips in 2019.
