Activision: CoD: Black Ops 4 digital sales break record on first day
Black Ops 4 delivered Activision’s highest digital sales in its first day of availability, the company announced. The game also set a record for digital sales in the PlayStation Store.
On its launch day, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 broke the record that Call of Duty: WWII set last year with its digital sales. In addition, a full game has never sold so many digital copies in the PlayStation Store on its introduction day, publisher Activision claims.
The message also shows the shift from physical sales to digital sales. For example, Gamesindustry.biz points out that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s physical sales hadn’t been that low in an opening weekend in the United Kingdom since 2007, when Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released. Physical sales of Black Ops 4 were 50 and 59 percent lower than those of Call of Duty: WWII and Black Ops III, respectively.
Black Ops 4 was criticized at the announcement because the game does not have a single player campaign, while it later turned out that DLC will only be available in combination with a season pass. Reviews on game sites are generally positive, with a score of 85 on Metacritic for the PC version, compared to 4.8 for user reviews.
