Lucasfilm forces a halt to the remake of Knights of The Old Republic
The development of Apeiron, the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, has been halted by Poem Studios. The developer must stop the project at Lucasfilm’s request and destroy material.
On Twitter Poem Studios shared the letter received from Lucasfilm. The letter states that while Lucasfilm understands the enthusiasm of the fans, the developer is not authorized to use KotOR’s license. In addition, Lucasfilm demands that everything related to the remake must be destroyed. “Over the past few days, I’ve been exploring all possible options to save this project, but we knew this day was coming,” said lead developer Taylor Trotter.
Apeiron was developed in Unreal Engine 4. New missions and worlds were planned. On screenshots, it seemed that the player could play from a first-person perspective, something that was not possible in the original game. Development of the remake started at the end of 2015 and no release date has been announced yet. The development team consisted entirely of volunteers.
Because the rights of KotOR belong to Disney and Lucasfilm, the remake was not allowed to be sold. That’s why Poem Studios had chosen to release the game for free. The original KotOR was released on September 12, 2003 for the Xbox. A few months later, on December 5, 2003, the PC version came out.
